Shark Bae Joi - Experiences From The Deep
There are moments out on the water, sometimes, that truly stick with you, the kind that make your heart thump a little faster. You know, like that time a really big shark, quite unexpectedly, decided to take our fishing boat for a ride. It was a 42-foot vessel, and this creature, so, it just pulled us backwards through the water at about seven knots, which is pretty quick when you are being towed by something from the ocean. The back of the boat, too it's almost, started taking on water, much like you might imagine from those old movie scenes, and the people on board, they certainly had their hands full.
That kind of raw power, that connection with something so wild and free, that’s a feeling many people who spend time on the ocean really appreciate. It’s a mix of respect and, well, a little bit of awe. We spend our days chasing fish, looking for those special spots offshore, places like the Prairie, Shark Fin, or Blue Dot, which have, apparently, been quite productive lately. Each trip out there holds the promise of something truly memorable, something that gets you talking for ages.
For us, with our BC licenses in hand, a lot of our fishing happened around Swiftsure, a place that, in some respects, has given us some great catches. We did quite well for chinook salmon, though, you know, we had to pick through them a bit to find the ones we wanted to keep. It’s all part of the adventure, the sorting, the waiting, the sheer excitement of it all, that, is that, truly makes it special for many who love being out there.

The Thrill of the Open Water - A True Joi Experience
There is a unique excitement that comes with being out on the vast, open ocean. It is, very, very different from anything you experience on land. The story of that shark pulling our boat, it’s just one example of the incredible, sometimes wild, things that can happen. Imagine being on a 42-foot fishing boat, feeling the sudden jerk, and then realizing you are being pulled backwards, quite quickly, by something you cannot even see. The stern, the back part of the boat, began to dip, and water started washing over it, creating a scene that felt straight out of a story you might hear around a campfire. The crew, too, had to move fast, trying to keep things steady, trying to figure out what exactly was happening below the surface. That kind of unexpected event, it truly, truly gets your attention, and it leaves you with a tale to tell for years to come. It’s a reminder of the sheer force of nature, a moment where you are just a small part of a much bigger, wilder system. That feeling of being connected to something so powerful, that’s a deep kind of satisfaction, a real, in a way, joi.
Finding those special places where fish like to hang out is a big part of the challenge and the fun. We talk about spots like the Prairie, Shark Fin, and Blue Dot. These are names that, for those who fish, bring up images of deep water, potential big catches, and the quiet hope of a successful day. These areas have, reportedly, been quite active, meaning fish are there, ready to be found. It’s not just about catching fish, though; it’s about the hunt, the strategy, the quiet patience required to be in the right place at the right time. The anticipation, the quiet moments waiting for a bite, the sudden rush when a line goes taut
